Augmented History - Twin Towers - WTC - Its not there but its there

"idea was to build a virtual memorial in remembrance of the 9/11 attacks in the U.S. and the destruction of the World Trade Center in New York City. The result will be the ability to point their Android and iPhone application at the place where the World Trade Center once stood and witness a 3D rendering of the Twin Towers, once more." via Techcrunch

"Go to the area around ground zero in NYC and you see a 3D icon on the left side of the cam view (in Wikitude v7.8 - on Android based phones). Click on it and the World Trade Center will appear as it looked pre-9/11."

Layar adds 3d objects

"Now, instead of just seeing basic information and hyperlinks related to the places around you, you might see full 3D objects. A game of Pacman in the local park, a passenger jet flying overhead and 3D text denoting places of interest are all possibilities according to technical demos released today.

3D objects are rendered using Open GL and can be touched by users to play music or open links to other content. The new technology will be officially unveiled at the Picnic Conference in Amsterdam, which runs from tomorrow until the end of the week. The public will get their hands on the 3D AR goodness when version 3.0 of Layar launches on Android in November." (Via the NextWeb)

Augmented Reality History: AR Quake 2002

ARQuake is an Augmented Reality (AR) version of the popular Quake game. Augmented reality is the overlaying of computer generated information onto the real world. We use a head mounted display, mobile computer, head tracker, and GPS system to provide inputs to control the game. Using ARQuake, you can walk around in the real world and play Quake against virtual monsters.

This is from 2002 and kinda cool with all those wearables :))

6th Sense (Augmented Reality)

Students at the MIT Media Lab have developed a wearable computing system that turns any surface into an interactive display screen. The wearer can summon virtual gadgets and internet data at will, then dispel them like smoke when they’re done. (via WIRED)

I know this concept is already 6 months and kinda old but it is very different than many augmented reality applications. It is not as private as looking through your mobile device but it is more social than that.

Speaker is Pattie Maes from MIT Media Lab

Invizimals in PSP (Augmented Reality Portable Gaming)

Sony announced a unique Pokémon clone for the PSP that you just have to see.

Shown during the Sony E3 press conference and discussed little after that, Invizimals is a curious game using the PSP's camera to create augmented reality "animal ghosts" that appear in real-life settings. Coded capture cards seem to attract the beasts, after which they do battle to each other. Nintendo DS-like blow-and-shake controls add extra input to the critter-fighting. (via CNET)
